What is Depression?

Depression is a mental illness characterized by sadness, general apathy, a loss of self-esteem, feelings of guilt, and, at times, suicidal tendencies.

It affects every part of you. It influences your thoughts and behavior, the way you feel emotionally as well as physically. It can change your attitudes toward your family, friends, and work.

It is a very lonely, frustrating and soul-destroying condition that requires support from friends, family, the medical profession and the community at large.

The good news is, depression is an illness that can be treated. You don't have to suffer!

Now that you know what depression is, here's what it isn't:

  • Depression is not a sign of personal weakness.
  • It's not "all in your head."
  • It cannot be willed or wished away.

Question: So which of these statements do you think could signal depression?

"I feel sad all the time."

"I just don't feel like myself."

"I've been having a lot of trouble sleeping lately."

"I feel completely overwhelmed by my life. I can't see a way out."

"I don't enjoy being with my friends or doing any of the things I usually love to do."

"I keep getting this back pain, and I don't know where it's coming from."

Answer: All of the above.
