When to Stop Taking Depression Medications?

There are so many different types of different types of depression medications out there, old and new. For a newbie to understand, whats the right one to take, and how long should one take it for?

And even if one takes it for the recommended period of time, when a patient stops taking the medication against the docs order, why is that so?

Does it mean the medication is in effective or what?
