Someone who experiences depression can have it brought on by any number of things. It can be quite devastating no matter what causes it. It can be caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain. It can also be caused by stress, emotional trauma or outside factors. One of the main causes of depression is self esteem issues. Individuals who experience this type of problem often have problems with their weight. They see themselves as somehow less of a person or not good enough because they are overweight. When this feeling happens over and over again, it can lead to problems with depression.

When this is the cause, though, the symptoms of depression such as problems socializing and a negative take on life can be lessened when an individual loses some weight. But, the problem with this is that it is easier said than done. Many people face problems with weight loss. It is not something that can be done easily. Often, people can begin to lose weight and then regain it. This up and down weight loss can actually lead to more serious depression.

So, What’s The Answer?

When it comes to depression that is triggered by weight and self esteem issues, it is best to seek the help of a doctor. Treatment can be both psychological and physical in nature. The doctor can help with the weight loss by having the patient work with a dietician. A dietician can provide tools such as education and weight loss plans to help the individual to be more successful in their weight loss efforts. From there, they can incorporate safe ways to lose the weight and how to keep it off.

On the flip side, the psychological aspect can work well for the depression issues. Doctors can help to treat depression with therapy as well as with medication if necessary. When the depression improves, weight loss can be more successful as well.

Because weight loss and depression are so linked, it can be nearly impossible for an individual to fight off the problems on their own. When you are overweight, it can trigger an increased level of depression. When you are depressed, you don’t work at your best levels of losing the weight. This type of cycle can go on and on. It is very much a dangerous one as well. Seeking help can often be the best way to work through depression and weight loss issues.
